Abia Police Debunk Viral Claim of 488 Boko Haram Arrests, Warn Against Fake News
The Abia State Police Command has dismissed a viral report alleging the arrest of 488 suspected Boko Haram members in the state, describing the claim as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Command said the video accompanying the report being circulated on social media is not recent, noting that it was an old broadcast recorded more than 11 years ago and has no connection to the current security situation in Abia State.
The statement, signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, warned members of the public against spreading misinformation capable of causing panic and public fear.
“As the lead internal security agency, the Command assures residents of its continued commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging citizens to go about their lawful activities without apprehension,” the statement read.
It further urged residents to support security agencies by verifying information before sharing, stressing the importance of relying only on credible and official sources.
“The State Police Command urges the public to support its security efforts by rejecting fake news and relying only on credible and verified sources for information,” it added.
Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, also cautioned against the spread of false information, warning that such acts could threaten public peace and security.
He further stated that individuals found guilty of disseminating false information would be arrested and prosecuted under relevant laws, including the Criminal Code Act and the Cybercrime Act.
The Command advised residents to remain vigilant and continue to cooperate with security agencies in maintaining peace and order across the state.
